Stepping Numbers

For over five years now, I have been tracking my steps daily and I enjoy looking over the numbers. This section breaks down some of those numbers from this week and cumulative for the year.

High & Low Days

The high day of the week with the most steps was Thursday, with 20,823 steps.

The low day of the week with the least steps was Monday, with 17,735 steps.

Weekly Totals

Throughout the week, I met my daily step target on 7 out of 7 days. I walked 133,512 steps for the week with an average of 19,073 steps per day for the week.

Year to Date

With the steps I have walked this week, I now have 3,078,819 steps for the year. That places me around 422,154 steps more than the same time last year. The goal for the year is 7 million steps. There is another 30 weeks to go I need 3,921,181 steps or 130,706 steps per week.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 23 in 2019. I walked 112,966 steps, giving me an average of 16,138 steps per day. Overall, I have walked 20,546 steps more this year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 19,557 steps a difference of 1,266 less than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 14,356, steps a difference of 3,379 less than this year.

Other Thoughts

After the last couple of weeks just missing my goal for the week, I am heartened to share I turned the trend around this week. I needed to walk 130,796 and achieved 133,512 around 2,700 steps more than needed.

Even though in the past week I have still spent time on hobbies like fishing and also time preparing more stuff to sell, I have taken a more active look at my walking daily. I achieved my daily goal on four occasions instead of just the single day like last week.

This week I have also achieved my third milestone for the year, passing 3 million steps. It appears to have been on Wednesday the 3rd of June, which is 21 days earlier than the same milestone last year.

It is amazing to me just how much difference there can be not just between the two years, but also on a weekly basis. Just this week I have walked over 20,000 steps extra to the same week last year. It is almost like I am getting a whole extra day of walking into the same time.

Then when I look at the year to date difference which last week surpassed 400,000 steps. It means on average this year I am walking around 2,500 steps more per day than I did last year.

An additional note I will make this week is with my daily streak. It is not something I talk about too often now, and this week it has reached no sort of milestone, but is up to 276 days in a row since I last missed the 15,000 steps per day mark.

I look forward to sharing more numbers with you next week. I hope you are enjoying your walking as much as I do and found a pleasant spot to take a walk.

High & Low Days

The high day of the week with the most steps was Thursday, with 18,874 steps.

The low day of the week with the least steps was Saturday, with 17,570 steps.

Weekly Totals

Throughout the week, I met my daily step target on 7 out of 7 days. I walked 127,108 steps for the week with an average of 18,158 steps per day for the week.

Year to Date

With the steps I have walked this week, I now have 2,945,307 steps for the year. That places me around 401,608 steps more than the same time last year. The goal for the year is 7 million steps. There is another 31 weeks to go I need 4,054,693 steps or 130,796 steps per week.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 22 in 2019. I walked 111,530 steps, giving me an average of 15,932 steps per day. Overall, I have walked 15,578 steps more this year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 18,031 steps a difference of just 843 steps less than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,069 steps a difference of 2,501 steps less than this year.

Other Thoughts

The second week in a row where I have missed the goal for the week. I needed to achieve 130,681 steps and only made 127,108 steps. So I have lost roughly 2,500 steps again this week from my buffer.

I think one aspect of missing this target comes from not paying enough attention to my steps daily. Combined with again more activities where I do not do the walking each hour of the day. Such as this week, I end up spending more time one day working on listing items on Facebook Marketplace, trying to clear some stuff from the house. On days like this it is not only a case of trying to catch up to my minimum 15,000 steps per day, but also get to the higher target of roughly 19,000 per day on average to meet my goal.

In fact, looking back over the week there was only one day when I even passed the daily average I need to meet my weekly goal. So this is something I will have to keep more at the forefront of my mind. It is ok to miss one or two days reaching that point per week, but when you miss most days, it can be challenging.

At the moment I won’t try to dig too deep into why I have missed the mark two weeks in a row. But if it continues, I will need to work out what I can change to solve the problem. I hope you have enjoyed your week walking and will be back next week to share another update.

Looking at The Numbers

For the month of May, I achieved my daily step goal on 31 days. The month saw me walk 588,356 steps with a daily average of 18,979 steps.

The day with the most steps was the 13th of May with 22,488 steps. The day with the lowest steps was the 2nd of May, with just 16,518 steps.

Walking Thoughts for May

Even though I found it a challenge over the last two weeks of the month to maintain the weekly totals I needed, I still did well for the month. My daily average steps for the month are the lowest this year, but overall they still land above the average I need to maintain.

May is also the first month for the year where my number of days with over 20,000 steps in a month has fallen below 10. I achieved just 7 days with over 20,000 steps for May.

As I have talked about in the past two weeks I need to ensure I don’t let my numbers keep slipping just that little. It can become an endemic part of the process, just a little off each week, can lead to failure right at the end. I think the result will be I need to just keep a better eye on my steps each day.

Sharing the details of my walking and being on top of updating statistics each week I think is one of the big things to help me get where I am at the moment. In past years, while it appears my stats were updated regularly, the reality is different. I would update a bunch of weeks at one time and rarely had a top-down understanding of my position. Which ultimately has led to me not achieving any of my yearly goals in the past few years.

This year I have been much more focused on getting the statistics updated on a weekly basis. While I have missed this on two occasions, just as the past two weeks. It has been good otherwise and I always know where I am at.

There is not much more to share for May in terms of numbers or thoughts. As always, I hope you are enjoying your walking and will have another monthly update at the end of June.

Year to Date

With the steps I have walked this week, I now have 2,818,199 steps for the year. That places me around 386,030 steps ahead of the same time last year. The goal for the year is 7 million steps. There is another 32 weeks to go I need 4,181,801 steps or 130,681 steps per week.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 21 in 2019. I walked 107,865 steps, giving me an average of 15,409 steps per day. Overall, I have walked 20,307 steps more this year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 15,804 steps a difference of 4,472 less than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,066 steps a difference of 1,891 less than this year.

If you would like to see the full update from last year, you can visit post at Walking Update – Week 21, 2019.

Other Thoughts

This week I have come in a little below the target towards my goal for the year. The target was 130,605 steps and I only walked 128,172 steps.

I can identify one reason for this shortage and it falls back to a new hobby I have been trying, fishing. I have been out several days this week fishing for at least one to two hours. While this does not seem like much, it seems to drag my mindset behind with the steps I don’t get in this period.

Although the lowest day for steps this week for me turned out to be a day I did not go fishing. But one that I spent some time on another hobby which is my bicycle. I enjoy riding when I can, but my primary bike has been out of action for some time and my secondary one had a problem which was getting worse.

So I headed out to run a few errands and to visit the bicycle shop to get the parts I needed to hopefully get both bikes working. The result end up being a lot of time in the car between the errands I needed to complete and the bike store. Once I got home, I spent more time working on the bike, all of which led to my lowest steps since the beginning of the month.

Even though I ended up down a little on my steps, this week to the target I needed to achieve I have a buffer. At the present time I am ahead by around 45,000 steps from where I need to be to achieve my goal. So this week I was around 2,500 steps under my target. Which I could do another 18 times through the rest of the year and still achieve my goal.

I hope that you have been able to find some nice places for a walk this week. I hope that in the coming month I might share a little more than my weekly updates. Possibly even a nice bush walk or something.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 20 in 2019. I walked 110,933 steps, giving me an average of 15,847 steps per day. Overall, I have walked 26,846 steps more than this week last year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 17,587 steps a difference of 4,901 less than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,152 steps a difference of 2,563 less than this year.

If you would like to see the full update from last year, you can visit post at Walking Update – Week 20, 2019.

Other Thoughts

The day to day step this week might have been different, but otherwise this week was almost a duplicate of last week. The difference in total steps for the two weeks was around 150 steps. With the low day even closer, separated by just 70 steps.

Unlike other years when working towards a goal I have had some big variances week to week, I am not finding that as much this year. It definitely takes a little work, but I am finding a consistency in my walking week to week, almost.

This week I also passed 250 days since I last walked less than 15,000 steps in a day. I think I have broken runs on this maybe 8 or 9 times. I could be more precise, but the way I have the data it is difficult to review. What I know though is the longest streak I have completed is 428 days in a row. It is a figure I will aim to beat, but of course still a long way off.

In other news, in Queensland some restrictions have lifted a little around COVID-19. I hope that in the next month I might get out into nature for a walk or hike. Also in June some local travel restrictions will lift and I might go away for two or three nights somewhere in Queensland.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 19 in 2019. I walked 114,126 steps, giving me an average of 16,303 steps per day. Overall, I walked 23,503 steps less than this year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 17,611 steps a difference of 3,088 less than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,054 steps a difference of 2,591 less than this year.

If you would like to see the full update from last year, you can visit post at Walking Update – Week 19, 2019.

Other Thoughts

The week has seen me walking just slightly more than last week with an increase of 139 steps per day on average. It is not a big increase, but it helps to bring down the average I need for the rest of the year by 194 steps per week.

Over the past week I have been trying to pay closer attention to the days that I do well with walking and the days that seem more difficult. One thing that I noticed is the days that are more difficult are the ones I do something different early on.

Regular week days I have a routine, it does not happen the same every day, but close. I will head out for my morning coffee and after enjoying it (in the car at present because of COVI-19 restrictions) I will take a walk around the small industrial estate where the cafe is. That walk is around 1.8 km and is roughly around 2,500 steps (I have not recorded the actual number yet). When I get home, I will walk from my house to the end of the street and back another, 1.5 km and around 1,800 steps.

When you combine these two brief walks in the morning with the other steps I get. Things like moving around the house, getting ready, walking in to get my coffee and such. I will often get home with around 6,000 steps. Throughout the day, I also attempt to walk 1,000 steps for each hour between 8am and 6pm.

The hours when I walk 1,000 steps are often overlapped by the morning walk. The walk to the end of my street and back is often the walk for 8am. Likewise, I am walking in the afternoon and this walk often covers my 4 and 5pm hours. The afternoon walk is at a rough guess 2.5 km, but can be very changeable depending on other errands I need to run or if I will do photography.

In the morning if I miss one or both walks, I find it quite a challenge to reach my step goal those days. It can be a challenge to reach the 15,000 minimum, let alone the 19,000 I am trying to average this year. Some weeks this does not end up being much of a problem, but other weeks it can be the reason I end up with days of 16,000 steps. This week it only resulted in one low day. The result is that I am looking at ways to try to ensure I get these walks, or make up for them in other ways.

I hope that you have got your walking in this week even with any local restrictions. But also remember that if you have restrictions, there is always time to walk later. Even walk around in your home if you cannot leave the house.

Other Thoughts

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect daily life, there is no actual change in how I am approaching my walking. I am still walking most of my steps each day at home. While going out for a short walk in the morning and afternoon away from home.

Where I live in Queensland, Australia, they have lifted some lockdown restrictions at the end of last week. It is now permissible to travel further from home for recreation. While some National Park’s and other recreation areas have reopened.

These changes mean that I could find more areas to go for a walk. However, I will leave that for a week or two while everyone else gets it out of their system. There were rather extensive crowds at some areas near me over the weekend. I am happy to wait for things to calm down.

I am also pleased with how I am progressing on my goal of 7 million steps. I need not monitor my walking too close to be staying on target. I know that reaching somewhere around 19,000 steps a day is ideal at the moment. But when days arise like Saturday where I very much struggled to reach my goal, I am ok with it.

Once I get out for a walk on a trail, I hope to share the experience. I have recently got a new camera and keen to get some photos to share. I will have to see what options are around and what is not to busy.

I hope you are finding the time to get out for a walk during this pandemic. But if you cannot get outside, remember there are plenty of ways you can get those steps indoors.

Looking at The Numbers

For the month of April 2020, I achieved my daily step goal on 30 days. The month saw me walk 580,513 steps with a daily average of 19,350 steps.

The day with the most steps was the 22nd of April with 22,662 steps. The day with the lowest steps was the 25th of April, with just 16,234 steps.

Walking Thoughts for April

After breaking the record for the most steps in a month in March, I expected April would be a little off that pace. However, it was not off by much at all, just 117 steps per day would have had me on the same pace.

To beat the record again in a month with just 30 days would require a much higher daily average though. I would have needed 20,115 steps per day to break last month’s record outright.

Two records that I am still looking at breaking this year are the top day and top week. Those two records both relate to week 44 in 2015. The total steps for the week was 167,174. While the record for the most steps in a day stands at 30,231.

There has been little to talk about this month otherwise. Isolation or lock down means most days are kind of like groundhog day. Just repeating the same thing day after day. But we still keep on walking and meeting out goals.

Stepping Numbers

For over five years now, I have been tracking my steps daily and I enjoy looking over the numbers. This section breaks down some of those numbers from this week and cumulative for the year.

High & Low Days

The high day of the week with the most steps was Wednesday, with 22,662 steps.

The low day of the week with the least steps was Saturday, with 16,234 steps.

Weekly Totals

Throughout the week, I met my daily step target on 7 out of 7 days. I walked 137,367 steps for the week with an average of 19,623 steps per day for the week.

Year to Date

With the steps I have walked this week, I now have 2,277,962 steps for the year. That places me around 293,811 steps more than the same time last year. The goal for the year is 7 million steps. There is another 36 weeks to go and I need 4,722,038 steps or 131,167 steps per week.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 17 in 2019. I walked 124,203 steps, giving me an average of 17,743 steps per day. Overall, I have walked 13,164 steps more this year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 25,277 steps a difference of 2,615 more than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,205 steps a difference of 1,029 less than this year.

Other Thoughts

The last week has been a rather uneventful week of walking. There were two different places I walked, because of needing to visit places for essential purposes. The first was a trip further afield to get some groceries that are not available locally. The second was to organise an exchange for my camera, which had a failure.

Beyond this walking, I did also venture out to photograph the sunset one afternoon. I parked a little away from where I was planning to take the photos and walked down. This was quite nice and something that I think I will try to do a little more often.

In Queensland we are looking at some current COVID-19 restrictions getting lifted at the end of the week. Specifically, the distance you may travel from home and the reopening of the National Parks. I don’t think I will run out this weekend to visit a National Park, as they may be rather busy. But it is definitely going to be on the cards in the near future.

This week there have been a few ups and downs in the walking. The low day was one of the lowest since January. It was a total public holiday in Queensland for Anzac Day and hardly left home. While I know I can get to 15,000 steps at home, it gets a drag going much beyond this. Not to say that doing the entire 15,000 at home is not something of a drag anyway. But you have to do what you have to do for the sake of a goal.

I hope that you have been out and about walking this week and will be back next week with another update.

Other Thoughts

Over the past couple of weeks I have been noticing the amount of walking I do a little more. In the past it is something that I have done and there is some variability to walking between home and other places. However, in the past few weeks with the tendency to stay at home with COVID-19 restrictions I have become more aware of my walking.

On many days I will do between 60-90% of my walking around the house. When you look at the number of steps, I walk that seems quite a lot. To me it proves that even 10,000 steps a day is potentially achievable for many people. It is just a matter of how you look at it.

How I Walk at Home

Just how you achieve your walking around the house can vary, depending upon your living arrangements. I live in a house on a 800sq meter block of land with a balcony. Each hour I walk around 1000-1200 steps and my fitness tracker buzzes to remind me if I have not walked at least 250 at tn to the hour. Around the house I have three or four different areas that I can walk.

  • I will often make use of the balcony. The area runs the length of the house at around 15m. Stepping with the cross beams underneath, I take 24 steps to cover the distance. So each hour, I aim for 50 laps back and forth.
  • Another option is to complete laps of the backyard. I am uncertain on the distance around the perimeter, but each lap is around 100 steps. When I use this option, I aim for 10 laps. This option is better early in the day before the full sun can make it a little hot.
  • Finally, failing these two options, I have found tracks inside the house. There are several lengths both upstairs and downstairs that I can use to walk laps. These are a last resort as it can be more difficult getting in between things. There are also more things to trip over. Plus, it can be more difficult to ensure accurate counting on my fitness tracker in this situation.

As you can see, even if I could not leave my property, getting my steps is not an issue. I hope that these might have given you some ideas on how to get a little more walking in if you are stuck at home.
