Stepping Numbers

For over five years now, I have been tracking my steps daily and I enjoy looking over the numbers. This section breaks down some of those numbers from this week and cumulative for the year.

High & Low Days

The high day of the week with the most steps was Wednesday, with 20,361 steps.

The low day of the week with the least steps was Monday, with 18,264 steps.

Weekly Totals

Throughout the week, I met my daily step target on 7 out of 7 days. I walked 133,909 steps for the week with an average of 19,129 steps per day for the week.

Year to Date

With the steps I have walked this week, I now have 2,002,968 steps for the year. That places me around 255,686 steps more than the same time last year. The goal for the year is 7 million steps. There is another 38 weeks to go I need 4,997,032 steps or 131,500 steps per week.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 15 in 2019. I walked 120,585 steps, giving me an average of 17,226 steps per day. That is 13,324 steps less than this year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 20,354 steps a difference of just 7 steps less than this year.. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,064 steps, which is 3,200 less than this year.

Other Thoughts

In the last week I have been almost exactly where I needed to be. I ended up just a little ahead of the weekly average that I need to reach my goal. While also arriving at the 2 million step mark for the year.

For the total steps for the week I am very much sitting just on the edge of where I need to be. I was over the current average I need by just 2,300 steps. As I found last week it does not take much to dip under that mark. I do still have a little safety buffer at the moment.

The safety buffer that I have built in at the moment is just over 33,000 steps. Which is considerable when I look at this week and only three days were under the daily average I need at the moment. With the lowest day around 500 steps under. I would have to replicate that 66 times to lose the safety buffer.

The other highlight for the week was just sneaking in on the 2 million step mark. I got over by just under 3,000 steps. While I have arrived at the same point just one week later in 2016. It works out to be 9 days earlier this year, because of the arrangement of the weeks. Definitely a good sign as I keep moving towards the goal.

Throughout the week I was not super happy with my progress. Some days I seemed to be not quite where I expected to be. I thought I may be a little behind under where I needed to be for the week. But I got just over the mark. While ideally I want to be ahead of the game each week, I also have stopped checking my progress until I write this update. I don’t want to be spending too much time looking at numbers all week.

For over five years now, I have been tracking my steps daily and I enjoy looking over the numbers. This section breaks down some of those numbers from this week and cumulative for the year.

High & Low Days

The high day of the week with the most steps was Sunday, with 20,445 steps.

The low day of the week with the least steps was Friday, with 16,292 steps.

Weekly Totals

Throughout the week, I met my daily step target on 7 out of 7 days. I walked 127,702 steps for the week with an average of 18,243 steps per day for the week.

Year to Date

With the steps I have walked this week, I now have 1,869,059 steps for the year. That places me around 242,362 steps ahead of the same time last year. The goal for the year is 7 million steps. There is another 39 weeks to go I need 5,130,941 steps or 131,562 steps per week.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 14 in 2019. I walked 118,780 steps, giving me an average of 16,968 steps per day. This is 8,922 steps less than I walked this year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 20,063 steps a difference of just 382 steps less than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,652 steps a difference of 640 steps less than this year.

If you would like to see the full update from last year, you can visit post at Walking Update – Week 14, 2019.

Other Thoughts

The last week has been probably the most significant changes to how and where I walk because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Progressively I have done a lot more walking around the house. Places like the verandah, the backyard and just even indoors. I suspect that for some time at least this may be the temporary normal for me.

This week has also been the lowest weekly total for me since week 3, 2020. I came in around 3,750 steps under the target for the week. The primary reason for this is on six of the seven days I walked less than the required daily average to achieve my goal. As of today, I would need to walk 19,003 steps per day for the rest of the year to reach my target. Since I had some buffer in my walking that I have already completed, I am not too concerned at missing the target a little like this occasionally.

Depending how things go next week, I am expecting to pass the 2 million step mark for the year. If that goes to plan it will be the earliest in the year I have reached that point in my records. It would also be almost 3 weeks earlier than I reached 2 million steps last year.

I hope that this update finds you still able to enjoy your own walking. Even with all that is going on in the world now, if you are able, getting outside for a walk can be beneficial. However, please remain aware that if you are in quarantine or self isolation, you abide by government restrictions.

Looking at The Numbers

For the month of March 2020, I achieved my daily step goal 31 days. The month saw me walk 603,479 steps with a daily average of 19,467 steps.

The day with the most steps was the 27th of March with 22,592 steps. The day with the lowest steps was the 1st of March, with just 17,049 steps.

Walking Thoughts for March

March turned out to be a very different month to what I expected. I knew that I would still work towards my goal for the year but had made no other plans. Somewhere along the way I lost track of what was going on a bit and missed updates on two weeks stats. In part, this relates to me being a little slack in getting it done. However, there is also the large distraction too many of the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The first unexpected occurrence was my total step count. Without thought or planning, it turns out that I broke my record for my highest steps in a month. I set the record back in October 2015 with 602,989 steps. Because of being a little behind on updating the statistics for two weeks, it was not until the 30th of March that I realised how close I was to breaking this record. I walked 603,479 this month and broke the record by just 510 steps.

In January when I missed the record by around 3,500 steps I would have said that it requires planning. But this month showed that sometimes things can just land in place in the right way. Looking forward considering that I only passed the goal by a small amount, I will likely pass it again this year sometime.

On another note, looking forward my plans will change a little this year. I had been looking into some much longer multi day walks. However, because of the current situation with COVID-19 in Australia, this will get put off for some time. With many restrictions on movement and interstate travel, I will stay closer to home and my regular daily walks for now.

Other Thoughts

I have caught up my weekly updates now, and this one comes only two days late. Moving forward I hope to stay on track with getting the updates out on time now.

Towards the beginning of the week I passed 200 days since I last missed my daily walking goal of 15,000 steps. It is one statistic I had in my mind, but had been not paying much attention to until today. The end of the week sees me at 206 days in a row walking 15,000 steps or more. Looking forward, I suspect that I will keep this streak going for the rest of the year. Considering my goal for the year, missing the daily step goal would not be positive.

With the unfolding COVID-19 situation around the world and in Australia, the places I walk have changed a little. While I had some plans for several more extensive walks throughout this year, they are now on hold. I am spending much more time walking around in and around the house.

Over the coming weeks I want to detail in several posts some of how I am getting my walking in with the COVID-19 situation. Where I am walking and how I am improvising to work within the guidelines that the government is putting in place. Just remember that the health and safety of yourself, your family and other community members is paramount. So if you are under quarantine or self isolation requirements you need to stick to them, you can always come back to walking at a future time.

Other Thoughts

Like last week, I am a week behind getting this post compiled. The data is always there, it just takes a little time to put it into my spreadsheet and copy it across here. Hopefully, from next week I will be back on track to keeping up the weekly rhythm.

There is nothing special in the numbers this week. When you look back at the same week last year though, it was a rough one. There was just one day when I missed my target and it was with a low of just over 10,000 steps. The lowest single day since week 27, 2015, when I walked just 6,456 steps one day. The other record on the low end for week 12 last year was the average per day, which came to just 15,324 steps per day.

I hope that you can still find a time and place to walk with the unfolding COVID-19 situation at the moment. If you have the ability, getting outside for a walk can be a great way to break up the day. However, please keep in mind not to break quarantine or self isolation requirements. Also, be sure you are aware of any localised restrictions and follow the government directives.

Other Thoughts

I don’t have a lot to share this week as I am catching up this update two weeks later. There has been a lot going on around the world at the moment. It has been difficult to focus on getting things done and even remembering what happened a few weeks prior.

I am still maintaining a good progression for my walking goal for the year. At my current daily average, I will meet my goal somewhere around the middle of December. There is not much room for error in there at the moment. But I want a goal that I am working on the whole time. Not something that I achieve far too easily.

While the global COVID-19 situation is still unfolding, I hope that you are making walking a part of your day. Even if all you can manage based on your circumstance is walking around the house or your bedroom.

Other Thoughts

The last couple of weeks I have been a little below a daily average of 20,000 steps. Whether I am above or below the 20,000 steps per day mark does not bother me much. Daily I am more concerned with staying over 15,000 steps. But reaching that bit higher is good sometimes.

Week 10 has found me surpassing that 20,000 steps per day average again. That number puts me above the daily average of 20,000 steps for 5 of the 10 weeks this year.

One thing that helped me achieve my targets this week and push past 20,000 on at least two days was getting out to mow the lawn. Although it does not contribute a majority of the steps, it adds between 5-7 thousand. Across the day, if I still do my regular steps, this pushes me that bit over 20,000.

That is all that I have for you this week. I hope that you have found some nice spots for a walk and I look forward to sharing some with you soon.

Other Thoughts

The week has been one of trials for my walking. I had a few days that I was not so motivated to get out and walk. However, even from the daily numbers you could not pick which days these were.

Often the problem I encounter is not so much a lack of motivation to walk. But something which saps my energy or motivation for a portion of the day. Thankfully, these periods will only last for a few hours. It just means that I end up walking more later in the day.

The total steps for the week saw me just edge over the average I am looking for to reach my goal. It turns out to be the ideal situation, as the idea for me setting the goal is not to reach it halfway through the year. I want to have a little leeway at the end of the year. But ideally I will reach the goal between the middle of December and Christmas. Time will tell how this turns out.

There is not much more to add to this week. So I hope that you have found some interesting places to walk this week.

Looking at The Numbers

For the month of February, I achieved my daily step goal 29 days. I walked 573,483 steps for the month which works out to an average of 19,775 steps per day.

The day with the most steps was the 16th of February with 23,149 steps. The day with the lowest steps was the 18th of February, with just 16,838 steps.

Walking Thoughts for February

I had a reasonably good month of walking throughout February. I achieved a good total for the steps and maintained a good pace towards my goal for the year.

Looking at the average daily steps for the month, I achieved 19,775 steps per day on average. At that rate, if I had another two days in the month, I would have surpassed my previous best month ever. I did not even think about that until now. Because I knew that February is a shorter month so there would have been a lot of work to beat the highest month.

I also only had one day that I walked less than 18,000 steps. Which without checking I believe would still make this the first time that I have achieved that outcome. Out of all 62 months I have tracked my steps, I have only had 10 months that averaged over 18,000 steps per day.

There have also only been two other months where I averaged over 19,000 steps. The first was October 2015, and the second was just last month in January 2020. But this month, even though I have not broken the record for my best month, I have achieved the highest average steps per day with 19,775.

Another little quirky thing I have noticed as entering the data for the table above is some very close round numbers. I think, as I have said in the past, trying to hit any exact number of steps in a day is nearly impossible. But three days I was so close, on the 4th I had 20,002, the 6th I had 21,001 and the 22nd I had 19,999. These numbers are nothing special, just an interesting occurrence I think.

I hope you have had a good month of walking yourself and that you enjoy seeing my numbers. I look forward to sharing more over the coming weeks and another monthly update in March.

Stepping Numbers

For over five years now, I have been tracking my steps daily and I enjoy looking over the numbers. This section breaks down some of those numbers from this week and cumulative for the year.

High & Low Days

The high day of the week with the most steps was Sunday, with 20,075 steps.

The low day of the week with the least steps was Tuesday, with 16,838 steps.

Weekly Totals

Throughout the week, I met my daily step target on 7 out of 7 days. I walked 133,632 steps for the week with an average of 19,090 steps per day for the week.

Year to Date

With the steps I have walked this week, I now have 1,055,456 steps for the year. That places me around 118,207 steps more than the same time last year. The goal for the year is 7 million steps. There is another 45 weeks to go I need 5,944,544 steps or 132,100 steps per week.

This Time Last Year

I also find it interesting to look back to last year and see a comparison for the week and year to date progress.

So let’s look at the step details from week 8 in 2019. I walked 125,126 steps, giving me an average of 17,875 steps per day. Overall, I have walked 8,506 more than this week last year.

The highest day for the week saw me walk, 30,268 steps a difference of 10,193 less than this year. While the lowest day for the week saw me walk, 15,075 steps a difference of 1,763 more than this year.

Other Thoughts

The last week has been rather uneventful and a little less walking than the previous few weeks.

The first thing I see is that my low day for the week is the lowest step count for just over a month for me. I have no problem with this it is not a bad thing to have a smaller day occasionally. I also dropped below the 20,000 step average for the week, with just one day over 20,000 steps. Again when I look at the week, it is ok as I still was just above the average needed for the rest of the year.

Looking back, a year it was week 8 in 2019 that I got the closest to beating my highest day record. The highest previously was the 29th of October 2015 with 30,321 steps. On the 23rd of February last year, I walked 30,268 or just 53 steps short of breaking the previous record I set. Not to worry, it is something that I will reach soon.

Over the past three years, I have taken a little longer to reach the one million step mark. In these years, it has happened somewhere in week 9 of the year. However, this year for the first time since 2016, I have passed the one million step mark in week 8. It does not mean that I have things easy for the rest of the year, but it is a good start for sure.

There are two factors in the coming week which may impact my level of walking. The first is the forecast for rain across most days. While I overcome this mostly, it makes things more difficult. The second is that I may travel for a few days. I often end up walking more steps while away from home than when I am at home. However, walking when away from home becomes much more reliant on the weather. I would do everything I can to achieve the minimum of 15,000 steps, but higher counts would not be as easy to achieve. I guess time will tell, and I will share those details in my next weekly update.
